Forestry First Aid Courses: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a forestry first aid course?
Forestry first aid training teaches you to care for an injured person in a remote woodland setting where an ambulance may be delayed. Alongside standard first aid, it covers major bleeding, chainsaw and tree-work trauma, and managing a casualty until help arrives. Our courses are Emergency First Aid at Work + F (EFAW+F) and First Aid at Work + F (FAW+F).
What is the difference between EFAW and EFAW+F?
EFAW+F is a 1-day course covering the essential emergency skills for forestry work. FAW+F is a longer course (2 or 3 days) that goes into more depth on injuries and illnesses and suits those with greater responsibility for first aid on site. If you’re unsure which you need, contact us and we’ll help you choose.
Which course do I need to work on Forestry Commission land?
Requirements vary by contract and site, so check with your contractor or the Forestry Commission. Many forestry contracts specify a forestry-specific first aid qualification such as EFAW+F or FAW+F. Get in touch if you’d like advice on the right level for your role.

How long does the certificate last?
Forestry first aid certificates are valid for 3 years. We recommend a refresher in between to keep your skills current.

What will I learn on the course?
Practical, scenario-based skills including CPR and defibrillator use, controlling severe bleeding, treating unconscious casualties, shock, fractures, burns, and chainsaw or crush injuries. You’ll also learn to manage a casualty in a remote location and give clear information to the emergency services.
Is the training mostly classroom-based?
No. It’s hands-on, using realistic casualty simulation rather than slides, so you build confidence you can use under pressure.
Do I need any experience before booking?
No. The courses are suitable for beginners and for people renewing an existing qualification.
