Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need training to use a defibrillator?
No. Public access defibrillators (AEDs) are designed to be used by anyone. Once switched on, the device gives clear voice and visual instructions. That said, training in CPR and AED use helps people act faster and with more confidence, and we’d always recommend it for your team.

Can a defibrillator harm someone who doesn’t need a shock?
No. An AED analyses the person’s heart rhythm and will only advise a shock if one is needed. If a shock isn’t appropriate, it won’t allow one to be delivered.

What should I do first if someone collapses?
Call 999 straight away, start CPR, and send someone to fetch the nearest defibrillator. Use the AED as soon as it arrives and follow its prompts.

Is my workplace legally required to have a defibrillator?
In the UK there is currently no general legal requirement for workplaces to have one. However, having an AED can be a sensible measure, and it’s worth considering as part of your first aid needs assessment. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we can help you think it through.

Which defibrillator is right for my site?
It depends on your environment, such as indoor or outdoor use, the number of people on site, and how exposed the device will be to dust, damp or temperature changes. Contact us with details of your site and we’ll recommend a suitable model.

Can defibrillators be used on children?
Yes. Many AEDs can be used on children, either with a child mode or with paediatric pads. Check the specification of the model you’re considering, and ask us if you’d like help choosing one that suits your needs.

Do I need a cabinet?
A cabinet isn’t essential, but it protects the device and makes it easy to find. Outdoor or publicly accessible defibrillators should be in a weatherproof cabinet. Some cabinets are heated and alarmed, so ask us about the options.

How often do pads and batteries need replacing?
Pads and batteries have expiry dates, which vary by model and manufacturer. Most defibrillators have a status indicator that shows whether they’re ready for use, and we recommend checking it regularly. We stock replacement pads and batteries so you can keep your device ready.

How should I maintain my defibrillator?
Check the status indicator on a regular schedule, keep a simple log, make sure pads and batteries are in date, and keep the device somewhere clean and accessible. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidance for your model.

Should I register my defibrillator?
Yes, if it’s publicly accessible. In the UK you can register it with The Circuit, the national defibrillator network, so ambulance services can direct callers to it in an emergency.
